I wonder if this is the same as the Mac laptops and Mac Studio, where it is upgradable but you must get one from a matching manufacturer (and Macs from different factories could have one of about four different manufacturers SSDs).

In that case they needed the matching chips, but now there are adapters.

"upgradeable" seems very loosely used here.

They unsolder the NAND chip, do re-balling and then solder in a new NAND chip. So yes, it is technically possible to upgrade the storage, but only specialist shops can do it successfully. Plus you likely need very specific chips because you'll be re-using the Apple controller and its built-in configuration (if any).
